In the increasingly crowded online space, it can be difficult to find ways of making your voice heard and getting your profile seen. The recent hashtag fever has been a great way for people to categorise and organise online information, and get the right people looking at the right things, but finding the best hashtags for music promotion can be a real challenge sometimes.
However, tapping into the right ones can help people find your profile and songs, and is a great way to boost your views. One of the great things about hashtags is that the people who find your content through them will usually have a genuine interest in that content, and will provide a valuable audience.
Many of the most popular hashtags are alliterative, such as #musicmarketing, and these have a nice, memorable ring to them which makes more people likely to use them. It’s important to make sure the tags are relevant to your specific music area; although #music is a trending hashtag, it’s not specific enough to reach your target audience, and has way too much noise and clutter already associated with it.
Bear in mind that the top hashtags for music producers will not be the same as the best hip hop music hashtags, or the best hashtags for singers. Different areas and subjects require different tags to be successful.
While you shouldn’t go overboard on the hashtags, you could try using a combination of popular, mainstream ones, and a unique one of your own. The main ones might help you get found, and the unique one will give people a way to link up to your content in the future, like building your own brand.
Some of the best music hashtags at the moment include #hiphop, #nowplaying, #guitarist, #musiclife, #songoftheday and #newmusic, but remember that just adding hundreds of tags which don’t have anything to do with your songs will not really help.
Try to find unique ways to specifically describe what you’re doing; if you’re hosting an open mic event, consider #openmic. If you’re trying something new and different, consider #experimentalsongs, or #tryingnewtunes.
Look for ways to express yourself and your ideas. If you think that your music relates specifically to a well-known band, you could consider hashtagging them and asking for their feedback, but be careful not to do this too often, and make sure the content is relevant; promoting like this can be annoying and seem too pushy if you do it a lot. We have listed some great examples of popular hashtags below. Check them out!

The most important thing with hashtags is to make sure that the tags you’re using are strictly relevant to you, so that people who find your content are interested and engaged, and don’t simply click away because it wasn’t what they were looking for. This is the fastest way to get your profile found and viewed by people who will like it, share it, and get your name out there in the world of social media.
