Most songs out there are born from moments of great inspiration. Artists of all kinds, including musicians, talk about finding inspiration as the first step in creating something new. People chase those bursts of ideas in countless different ways. In this article, I am going to talk about 15 of the best song inspiration techniques. These tips can help with melody writing, song title ideas, and even writing great lyrics.

So, if you feel like you need a place to start or have hit a creative wall in your songwriting, look no further! This article was written for you.

1. Exercise

Physical exercise can be one of the best things that you can do to boost your creativity, freeing your mind and allowing you to dig deep for inspiration. It gets your blood pumping and will take your brain off your work so it can be free to wonder.

2. Take A Break

Distance makes the heart grow fonder. Sometimes you just need to step away from what you’re working on so that you can come back with fresh eyes.

3. Write Everything Down

Writers are known for carrying around little notebooks, or even using their phones, to write down everything that pops into their head. You may be surprised what one thought from a month ago can do for your music today.

Also, don’t just write ideas down, go back through and read them!

4. Listen To Other Music

You do need to be careful not to steal someone else’s ideas but listening to music that inspires you can give you new ideas for your own music.

5. Just Write

During any writing session, you should just write everything that comes to mind. This may seem pointless, but you may end up letting an amazing story just flow out.

6. Clean Your Desk

If your workspace is cluttered, you may get distracted while trying to write and prematurely end any creative bursts you may have.

7. Leave Town

A change of scenery can do wonders for creativity. You could have a place where you love to relax or one that helps you to calmly reflect. If you don’t, get out and explore until you find one. Having a place you can sit and focus away from your normal workspace can help you reimagine the music you are currently working on or help you get something new started.

8. Brush Up On Music Theory

Education is always an important step to getting better. You will find a lot of inspiration in taking music theory classes from the coursework, the other students in the class, and maybe even the teacher.

9. Make Something New Daily

A lot of successful artists focus on creating something new every day, which is an excellent habit to get into. Creativity must be practiced and honed, so keep those skills sharp!

10. Meditation

It can be extremely helpful to remember to take some time and meditate. Relax and clear your mind, allowing those creative thoughts to come in.

11. Friendly Advice

When in doubt, get the advice of a friend or another trusted individual to see what they think of your work. They may have some excellent advice to help you find inspiration. Even if it is bad advice or something that you will not end up following, their perspective could get your ideas flowing again.

12. Listen To The Sounds Around You

Sometimes you can find a lot of inspiration from the sounds in your environment. Traffic, birds, trains, the unintelligible chatter of a coffee shop. Any of these could be a rhythm or melody that can be the foundation of your neck project.

13. Create A Daily Routine

Coming up with a ritual that you stick with or a daily schedule will be a great way to find inspiration.

14. Collaborate With Another Artist

Do you know any other musicians? Share some of the ideas you have with them and see if together, you can develop them into a full song.

15. Use A Different Instrument

If you normally play the guitar, try sitting behind a piano or keyboard for a little bit. By messing around on this new instrument, you may come across a new melody or rhythm for your song.

Now, Get To Work!

Inspiration can come from anything, at anytime, and in any amount. As artists, we just have to ready when it happens.

With the list above, I am not saying you need to do all of these, but a few here and there could really keep your creativity fresh. It will let your mind relax a bit and let some new ideas begin to grow.

KID TRAVIS (R&B, POP)

With an already buzzing YouTube audience of over 400K+ subscribers, Kid Travis wanted his Instagram profile to start gaining some of that same traction.

While you can get some spill over audience from YouTube, Kid Travis knew that Instagram ad campaigns could boost his presence on IG even further!

He discovered that trying to run Instagram ads yourself vs. having us add our years of experience and expertise to them made a huge difference!

His main goal was to achieve new followers who are seriously interested in his journey as an artist.

Kid Travis already had amazing talent but needed to combine his music genius with some marketing expertise to get the best of both worlds.

We were able to bring out the heart of his music through paid ads by editing & optimizing his existing videos and properly researching and structuring his ad campaigns.

The end results: We were able to consistently and predictably gain followers averaging between $0.25-$0.35 per follower (including a bulk of the promotion being done in high cost English speaking countries such as United States, United Kingdom, Australia, & Canada) resulting in around 4,000 new, engaged followers/month on Instagram.
